Fiber and low-voltage crews in Silicon Valley

Silicon Valley is one of the oldest and densest data center markets in the United States, centred on Santa Clara, where many colocation buildings sit within a few miles of each other. It is one of the primary markets in CBRE's semiannual reports.

Power availability limits how fast new capacity arrives, so most of the work here is fit-out, expansion and technology refresh inside existing buildings rather than greenfield campus construction.

Our home market

Hardline is based in San Jose. Santa Clara, San Jose, Milpitas, Sunnyvale, Fremont and Hayward are local, and larger phases bring in traveling crew members to supplement the local core. Being in the market means we can walk a site before committing to a scope, respond to short-notice schedule changes, and maintain a stable local presence on a longer phase without fly-in costs applying to every rotation. Typical mobilization is 5 to 7 days for this market; jobs that do not require traveling crew members often move faster.

Refresh and fit-out, not greenfield

Because power constraints limit large greenfield builds, most Silicon Valley scopes are inside buildings already in service: expansion halls, technology refresh, or fit-out for a new tenant in an existing colocation structure. Rack and stack crews and structured cabling crews doing this work operate under live-environment controls: MOP for every change, documentation at every step, no activity affecting a neighboring suite or cooling path without sign-off. Fiber splicing crews running new backbone between suites face the same controls. Cleanliness and documentation matter as much as speed. A rack or cable run that does not match the as-built is a problem discovered during commissioning, not during installation.

California rules we plan around

The licensing requirement affects who signs off on the work. The classification rules affect who can be on the crew and how they are engaged. Both are easier to get right at the start of a job than to correct mid-phase, and we scope every California job with them already factored in.

When the job is scheduled close in

Refresh work is often booked with less lead time than greenfield construction. A tenant may schedule around a maintenance window, or a colocation operator may need a fit-out complete before a customer cuts over. Being based in San Jose means we can respond to those timelines without a multi-day travel ramp-up at the start. For short-fuse scopes, we confirm crew availability and site access requirements together, so neither blocks the other. OTDR testing and certification and punch-list and QA/QC crews join the tail end of a phase on the same basis.
