Fiber and low-voltage crews in Chicago

Chicago is one of the largest data center markets in North America, with a dense cluster in the O'Hare-area suburbs, newer campuses further west around Aurora and carrier hotels in the downtown core. It is a primary market in CBRE's semiannual North America reports, and it presents a labor question that does not come up the same way in most other markets.

The first question we ask

Many Chicago-area data center sites operate under union labor agreements. Our crews work on open-shop sites. When a scope comes in, the first thing we confirm is the site's labor agreement status, because it determines whether we are the right fit. There is no point in a week of back-and-forth on crew size and schedule if the labor agreement rules us out on day one. Tell us the status when you send the scope and we will give you a straight answer.

Interconnection-heavy sites near O'Hare

The Elk Grove Village and Franklin Park cluster carries a high density of carrier interconnections, cross-connects and meet-me room infrastructure. That work is rack and stack and structured cabling suited to crews accustomed to live environments: precise labeling, documentation at every step, and changes managed through tickets. Fiber splicing crews running new spans between carrier facilities face the same discipline. Aurora and the western suburbs are less interconnection-dense but typically involve larger builds with more backbone scope and campus fiber. The O'Hare cluster also involves tight coordination with other trades in active facilities, which we account for in crew scheduling and shift overlap planning.

Splicing through a Chicago winter

Outdoor and campus fiber work in winter needs more preparation in Chicago than in most markets. Fusion splicers and cleavers do not perform reliably in cold air; temperatures below freezing can cause the splicer to misread the fiber end-face and produce a high-loss splice. Heated splice tents bring the working environment into the range where the equipment performs correctly. OSP and campus fiber crews budget for tent setup and heater time as part of the scope, not as optional line items. OTDR testing and certification conducted outdoors in winter follows the same preparation. Inside a heated and enclosed building, winter changes little once the shell is conditioned.

Where we work

Elk Grove Village, Franklin Park and Itasca near O'Hare; Aurora and the western suburbs; downtown Chicago. The downtown carrier hotels have their own building access, loading dock and elevator scheduling requirements, which we factor into the mobilization plan rather than discovering them on day one. Crews fly into O'Hare, which sits beside the main suburban cluster. Mobilization is typically 7 to 10 days from a signed scope, with travel, per diem and lodging in the rate.
