The math
Fiber splices = fibers per cable × cables × splice points per cable
Ribbon splices = fiber splices ÷ 12 (for 12-fiber ribbon)
Splicer-hours = splices ÷ splices per hour
Crew-days = splicer-hours ÷ (splicers × productive hours per shift)
Example
Two 3456-fiber cables between buildings, each with 2 splice points:

- How do I count splices on a ribbon cable?
- Divide the fiber count by 12 for standard 12-fiber ribbon, then multiply by the number of splice points. A 3456-fiber cable has 288 ribbons, so each splice point is 288 ribbon splices.
- Does the estimate include prep and testing?
- The productivity figures include typical cable prep and tray work at the splice point. Testing is separate — plan OTDR and loss testing capacity alongside the splicing crew.
